A budget carrier in Japan, Onseb Air, is allowing passengers to smoke again during flights, to make use of the ashtrays that remain on their planes.
The airlines safety video has been updated to make it clear smoking is permitted, especially in the bathroom, where ashtrays have always been plentiful.
“We figured we still have the ashtrays on the planes, and so we might as well give the people what they want.”
Also, it was going to cost a lot of money to remove the ashtrays and so we thought “Its time we gave smokers a reward for hanging in there – you know, through all the hard times.”
Passengers will be permitted to bring their own ashtrays if they prefer, providing they have purchased the airline’s “Fly Quicker, Live Shorter” package.
According to the airline: “Offering a smoking bundle is fairer, because we don’t want to charge those guests who don’t want to bring their own ashtray onboard.”
The airline will offer a small VIP smoking lounge on board, including a dedicated bathroom just for smoking and a specific in-flight ashtray emptying and custom lighter service, called “Need a light?”
Anyone wishing to smoke will be given instructions on how to manually override the fire alarms in the toilets.
However, in a blow to Millenials and other people who never smoked properly but use smoking to boost their self-esteem, e-cigarettes will continue to be banned, as the battery inside is considered an unnecessary safety hazard.
